Influential

With one single (decidedly long-winded) blog post, controversial blogger Xiaxue slapped the Opposition - rather, their unenlightened and unintellectual supporters in New Media - right in the face and made me the biggest convert of the year. Love her!

Cathy Nguyen

With more than 3 million YouTube views in 3 days, Wong Fu Production's 16-minute short STRANGERS, AGAIN - a meaningful essay on the various stages of a love relationship - has made quite an online celebrity out of 23-year-old lead actress Cathy Nguyen, who is Vietnamese-American with "a bit of French and Thai". You can see her in some of WFP's older videos or visit her music channel here.

The Online Citizen

I won't consider myself (particularly) pro-Government (i.e. pro-PAP), but condemning it ad infinitum ain't no help at all. Websites like The Online Citizen and The Temasek Review have no credibility whatsoever, so I can only say I'm more than relieved to know that the latter will be shutting down after July. When's TOC's turn??

DISGRACED UCLA STUDENT ALEXANDRA WALLACE MUST BE FEELING DAMN REGRETFUL OVER HER RACIST RANTS AGAINST ASIANS IN HER SCHOOL. HOPEFULLY.

foursquare

Regardless of Yew Hong's explanation on Facebook, I remain unclear about the workings of foursquare (wireless or GPS?), which is capable of reporting the exact whereabouts of its members/users. As I mentioned, will there be a day when we see something like "Alan Tan (i.e. me) has just checked into Bukit Ho Swee public toilet cubicle #3"? :-O

Facebook Places

Facebook's evolving and innovating at such a rate that, quite frankly, it's virtually impossible for the other social media platforms to pace up. And now there's this new (mobile) feature called Facebook Places, where - I believe - it allows you to know where your friends are nearby. What more can we ask for?

FookYouMyFriend

"One day, Facebook, YouTube, MySpace and Friendster will come together as one. It will be called FookYouMyFriend." This is the most ROFLMAO thing I've heard so far this year!

LinkedIn

Do job candidates actually disclose honest and truthful information about their work experience? Or is there an extent of 'exaggeration'?

Xunlei

Make no bones about it, Xunlei's a real PITA. As much as it's a leading bittorrent client, I must say the web traffic there sucks! For days/nights and longer, I've been trying to download 'Swift Thunder' (how ironic), but the process takes forever - and I'm now majorly pissed with the constant disruptions and disconnections. Bah!

E-mail Killer?

On the same day when Facebook co-founder and CEO/President Mark Zuckerberg announced the launch of his social networking leviathan's new all-in-one messaging service, both Gmail and Hotmail suffered outages. Hmm...we can smell a cyberwar coming.

skype

Never been a user of the application software skype until latterly and solely for work purposes. In the past, ICQ was all the rage (where anonymous chatters would go by UINs). Then came MSN (now Windows Live) Messenger, which I'm most adept at and accustomed to. As mentioned, skype's our current workplace communicator (or 'Intranet') - and methinks I should be more 'adventurous' with the emoticons (learn from my colleagues!) since there are so many to select from :-D

SHA 2010 A

Can they (i.e. organizers i.e. Y.E.S. 93.3 FM) secure some A-listers this year? Locals, small-timers and over-the-hillers don't count.

Internet Filtering

The Censorship Review Committee here's proposing the use of filters in place of the present 100-site ban when it comes to Internet content. Wowzers, really? As many as 100 websites have been blocked from our access? I bet most of them are dealing in pornography.

Don't Feed the Troll

A 'troll' in this case/post doesn't refer to one of those fearsome Nordic creatures; here, we're talking about "someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into a desired emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion". You know, those so-called 'faceless keyboard warriors' with tendencies to spend hours upon hours in front of their computers bombarding cyberspace with their balderdash. Hence, the title means 'don't encourage/instigate them'.

Rediffusion

Honest-to-Godness, I was compretely incognizant of Rediffusion's continued subsistence past the seventies (my bad); this so-proclaimed "Singapore's ONLY subscription radio" - as if that's such a good thing, considering MediaCorp runs no less than 13 free-to-air FM stations - has, in actuality, been in the scene for more than 6 decades! Ham!

Windows Movie Maker

Don't feel small, think big. Even established film directors like Steven Spielberg started with making home movies (which he charged admission for). With the easy-to-use Windows Movie Maker, John Woo wannabes can shoot their own action sequences, edit them with this free software and maybe - just maybe - showcase the finished product at Sinema.

New Media

Coincidentally, it's been reported in the noose that new media has become the new darling for advertisers and promoters hoping to get the word out fast. It's a wholly operable distribution and exhibition platform, which means I shouldn't delete this blog or deactivate my Facebook account anytime soon.
