Mor-dam

Why do (most) Singaporeans - even the 'computer mavens' - enunciate the word 'modem' as such? Doesn't 'mor-dam' sound awkward at all? You tell me. Anywaste, mine's an antiquated Alcatel SpeedTouch USB (AKA the 'Stingray') and, thus far, connectivity-wise, it hasn't given LP any major problems.
