Raise the Red Lantern

In Chinese custom, red lanterns signify good luck and prosperity. As one age-old legend goes, hundreds of these were hung outside houses to ward off rampaging village monsters many, many years ago. (Of course, there were also gongs and firecrackers involved.) Funny how the symbolism of the color red contrasts from East to West; in THE VILLAGE, for instance, red is seen as a 'bad color' synonymous with - you guessed it - rampaging village monsters. Of course, that was only a movie...
