Well after reading the Da Vinci code and looking at those two paintings again, its amazing how many hidden things there are.
Whether the artists meant them or they were just oversight by them, who knows. I think the artists would have to mean it, because its not like you are taking a photo and accidentally take something else in the background. Here you have to spend many hours meticulously painting it in, and you don't just paint it in by accident.
I think the artists probably meant it, but were they right in doing so? I don't know. I haven't read 'The Da Vinci Code', but a colleague of mine lent me this book called 'The Da Vinci Deception'. I'm still thumbing through it :-)
